The Sheats-Goldstein Residence

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, designed by John Lautner in 1963, is a landmark of organic modernism in Los Angeles. Originally built for the Sheats family, the home was later purchased and transformed by James Goldstein, who collaborated with Lautner to refine and expand its vision.

Perched on a hillside, the residence seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings through its bold concrete forms, expansive glass panels, and open-plan design. The home blurs the boundary between indoors and out, with built-in furniture, skylights, and water features enhancing its connection to the landscape.

Goldstein’s ongoing enhancements honor Lautner’s original philosophy while pushing the home further into the realm of immersive design. Additions such as the Above Horizon Skyspace by James Turrell and an underground nightclub reinforce its status as both an architectural masterpiece and a cultural icon.
