One Omotesando
Completed in 2003, One Omotesando by Kengo Kuma is a seven-story commercial building that reinterprets urban architecture through natural materials. Serving as the head office for Louis Vuitton Japan, the building also includes high-end boutiques on the first and second floors. Its façade features vertical wooden fins, which introduce warmth and texture, softening the boundary between nature and the built environment.
Tokyo’s fire regulations at the time limited the use of wood in large-scale structures. Kuma overcame this by integrating an advanced sprinkler system, allowing him to maintain his material-driven design while meeting safety requirements. The result is a building that contrasts with the surrounding glass-and-steel structures, offering a tactile, organic presence in Omotesando.
